![]() These sections won't really appeal to RTS fans, of which I am not, nor will they appeal to people who enjoy hack and slash games, of which I am. I can't say these sections have ever been challenging or super engaging, as they mostly boil down to "fly over here, get fans, spam one or two types of units, wait and win" but take a weird and sudden dive into frustrating towards the end, thankfully in just the last two instances of them, both of which can be completely cheesed and exploited in their own ways. You retain your normal hack and slash mentality and controls, but are given troops and units to spawn, geysers of "fans" to take over for currency to spawn said units, and the objective of overwhelming the enemy and destroying their stage before they destroy yours. This part of the game only rears its head in the main story missions and multiplayer modes, but one way or another you'll have to adapt to it, and it is hard to say it really pleases anyone, but it is certainly not horrible for something the game throws at you completely out of nowhere. If you haven't seen this game before, it would be nigh impossible to guess how they'd pull it off blindly, but let me just say that it's shockingly serviceable. Things are made more special with light combo mechanics and offensive guitar solos (Instakill face-melting solos included), but it's all only there to add onto the other main gameplay mechanics, which I'll touch on shortly.Įasily the most divisive part of Brutal Legend is the RTS aspect of it. On the hack and slash end, you have some rather simple combat, you won't find yourself stylishly juggling anybody or doing frame-perfect dodges, you're given a ranged attack and a melee attack and told to get out there. It is a strange mix of hack and slash, RTS, and open world genres, managing to pull off all three of these things to varying degrees of success. How Brutal Legend actually plays as a game is where it becomes interesting. But it does go a little deeper than that, thankfully. If you are a fellow metalhead and haven't touched this game, I would go as far as to call it essential simply on these merits, regardless of how deep into metal you truly are. The soundtrack is almost entirely made up of licensed tracks, somehow spanning almost every subgenre of metal, which appeals to those who want glam metal, those who want industrial, thrash, and even appeals to people like me who want nothing more than Swedish melodeath 24/7. This is to say it is a glorified love letter to all things metal, I mean Jack Black literally voices the main character, you have main characters portrayed by and modeled after Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister and much more I can't quite recall off the top of my head, and you quite literally kill people with the power of music. Despite this, I will do my best to look at this game objectively and not let it get in the way of my judgement.įor those not in the know, Brutal Legend is a game from Double Fine which bottles the very essence of metal music, metal culture, and the imagery behind it, and then proceeds to splatter it all over the canvas of a video game. Over the span of about a decade, I have beaten Brutal Legend 3 times, and recently started my 4th playthrough, which spawned my desire to make this post. I need to preface this by saying, to every extent of the word, I am HEAVILY biased in favor of this game.
